What this indicator asks

Is there a body for the night in New York that people can approach, and how lasting and powerful is it? Does the night sector have a voice that speaks for culture?

61.5/ 100 · New York

New York has a night office set up in law: the Office of Nightlife, created in 2017 together with the Nightlife Advisory Board. It has no licensing, permitting or enforcement role, and no budget line of its own. Its 2025–2026 report makes eleven recommendations, such as removing the remaining barriers to music and dance in liquor licensing.

An expert said the Office had four staff and a budget of about $500,000, for more than 27,000 venues and about 300,000 workers. They said the Office must not license, permit or enforce, because enforcement had been the night’s only contact with the city:

“[The Office of Nightlife] needed to be a place people could approach with a problem without worrying that the conversation itself would lead to an inspection, enforcement or punishment.”
